Happy St. Patrick's Day

3/23/13

Addendum...yes, I was meant to be a Patrick....I have two older sisters, you see.  My Dad told me once in a birthday card that he had to admit that he was disappointed that February day, 57 years ago.  He did go on to say that I hadn't disappointed him since though!!!

So, only fitting that I met my husband-to-be on St Patrick's Day, 32 years ago.

Nature

3/23/13

Just a quick note about some interesting nature finds.
We are seeing tons of OSPREY...GO OSPREY!!!
Dolphins play in the bow wave. So we lean off the bow and cheer them on.
Jellyfish sparkle..are they intelligent beings?
White and Roseate Ibis, the next best thing to seeing a flamingo..beautiful pink.
Wood Storks.  Now why anyone would think they would deliver a baby is beyond me.
Of course many herons and egrets.
Yes, and manatees, although they are secretive.
Northern Gannets, Cormorants, Plovers, oh and two Eagles so far.

Now for the weird/sad things.
A dead turtle, floating bloated.
A dead pregnant female manatee..yes we saw her up close when she was being hauled in to be sent for necropsy.
A dead possum-looking animal in the water.
An injured Northern Gannet.

We are currently in St. Augustine waiting for friends Karen and Patrick to arrive.  Love this place.  I had grits with bacon, mushrooms, scallions, pepperjack cheese, and shrimp for dinner last night!!! Mmmmm, that southern food is FINE. Now doesn't Geoff look nautical and jaunty.  Cool thunderstorm at the moment...gotta go watch the lightning!!!!

The Keys with Winnie and Jack

Our ten days together just FLEW by, we traveled a lot of miles and ate a lot of great meals aboard Osprey (mostly when Winnie and Jack took their turn in the galley- watch for the opening of their new restaurant in Ashland).

We met in  Marathon on March 6th ( the weather did not co-operate for meeting in Key West) and all trooped down to Key West so Winnie and Jack could turn in their rental car, we then had a great dinner in Key West.  Our return to Marathon was by city bus, a bit slow but we made it work.

We then wended our way through the Lower Keys for about three days, trying to find travel routes that kept us in sheltered waters, away from the wind waves- for most every day W and J were with us, the winds managed to stay up in the 15-20 knot range.  Because of the windy conditions (and cooler temperatures, one night we saw temps in the 50's) we didn't get any snorkeling or scuba diving time, but we did a lot of boating.

Winnie or Jack were at the helm almost 100% of the time, applying all of that "book learnin" they have been doing since November.  They did a GREAT job.  Not only did we miss every boat that came close to us, we never got close to the bottom, either.  Not even a near grounding (Patty and I have a few of those on our record already) !  We made them sweat a few times but they handled everything like pros.

Since they were ticketed to fly out from Fort Lauderdale, we started north about mid-week so that we would arrive in Ft Lauderdale in time for their flight.  The trip north was windy, but the temperatures were pleasant and everything went according to plan.

We are looking forward to their return to Osprey in early May in the Chesapeake.

More Keys Time

This last week we have had a wonderful visit with my sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Al Meyer.  They handled the small space, pumping the head, climbing in and out of the dinghy with alot of grace.  I guess the balance of daily awesome sunrises and sunsets paid off.  We have just meandered around the Keys, bird watched, swam, and dingied to shore.  OH YEA!...and ate very well!! Kathy wants to eat seafood her whole time in Florida and of course, we had to trial any Key Lime Pie we could get our hands on!

We are currently in Marathon City Marina at Boot Key Harbor and await our next visitors, Winnie and Jack.  This is an amazing community of many live-aboards, either full time or people that winter on their boats here.  We will head to Key West and then start our trek Northward.  We miss your sweet faces and hope that you are all well.

Oh yes, the big news...we rented our house and I feel very blessed who the renter is.  Our house is in good hands.

Take care,
Patty
